Many people depend on Wink for a crucial aspect of their lives, charting their fertility. Our priority is to keep a sharp eye out for bugs in Wink’s firmware (the software that communicates with the Kindara app). We have spent countless hours understanding how Wink should behave in various situations to make sure it's a bug-free, quality product.
Quite a bit of that time is spent testing the performance of Wink and the Kindara App.
To ensure Wink meets expectations, we've run tests on accuracy, precision, battery life and Bluetooth connectivity. Our favorite is accuracy testing - because a lot of our focus for Wink is on the accuracy, Wink is attaining great results.Our testing shows that Wink’s total potential error is 0.013 degrees Celsius. For comparison, an off-the-shelf thermometer can be inaccurate up to 0.2 degrees Celsius - this is 15 times the error Wink holds.
We're happy with our results - for this test, the largest discrepancy between the temperatures taken with Wink and the average temperatures taken with our industrial thermometer around the same time was 0.02 degrees Celsius. The standard environment for testing clinical thermometers is a controlled water bath, which we’ve created this by employing an aqua-heating element and a continuous scientific thermometer that tells us what the true temperature of the water is (precision error calculated at ~0.004C).
Making certain that Wink has a long battery life is another priority for us. What good is such a beautiful device if it’s constantly charging and not on display? We decided a single charge should last for at least one month. To ensure this outcome, we reviewed our manufacturer's electronics specification sheet to find which of Wink’s Bluetooth interactions drain the most battery. From this information, we devised a plan to test how syncing drains Wink’s battery. To test, we recorded Wink's battery level then synced 250 temperatures to the Kindara App. The battery only drained 25% after all these syncs, which gives us the amount the battery drains every sync.
The final stage of Wink evaluation is also the most fun: testing functionality and durability for everyday use. Our beta testers run Wink through a gauntlet of physical testing, such as drop testing for the clumsy and motion testing for the active! Motion testing will help us save battery life by making sure Wink only wakes up when it should. We will simulate everyday activities, like Wink bouncing inside a purse or shaking as you ride on your motorcycle.

We're pleased with the results we’re seeing with Wink. This is the first device of its kind, and the journey has been long and arduous.
